THE PEOPLE & THE RECORD

Black congregations built authority, while ordination rules differed

Expanded history4 sourced episodes

Congregational independence, theological education and permission to hold ordained office are distinct. These episodes concern particular Christian denominations and do not represent every Black religious tradition.

Field records. A connection to your workplace needs its own evidence.

Scope & research limits

Four selected episodes involving AME institution-building, an interdenominational seminary and Episcopal ordination. They are not a universal clergy qualification or appointment system.
